About

Whether you are new to cycling or have been tackling centuries for years, been personally affected by AIDS or looking for a new challenge - AIDS/LifeCycle is an incredible experience that will stay with you forever. For seven days in June a community of people from all walks of life come together to cycle 565 miles down the coast of California from San Francisco to Los Angeles, raising funds and awareness for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the LA Gay & Lesbian Center.
I first started riding because of the personal challenge but after my experience on ALC3 I vowed to get more involved. Three years ago I volunteered to be a Training Ride Leader and set up the first CAT Training Series, a set of rides designed to help beginner rides prepare for the event and to keep the amazing sense of community that is established on AIDS/LifeCycle alive through the long months of training.
It was an enormous success and has now become a fixture on the ALC Training Calendar with similar series being set up in the East and South Bay. Starting on January 20th 2008, we’ll meet at Sports Basement in the Presidio and head north over Golden Gate Bridge to explore Marin. The rides start short but get steadily longer and more challenging so that by DAY OF THE RIDE you’ll be ready to tackle that century. Check “Training Rides” section to get details of all the rides.
In the mean time there a couple of things you might want to check out. Firstly, the CAT Series is somewhat famous. When it was first conceived three years ago one of our riders (and now one of our Cycle Buddies) wrote a book about the experience - The Ride: How to Ride Your Bike from San Francisco to Los Angeles Without Even Dying - it’s pretty much the best overview of the full AIDS/LifeCycle experience (training and all) we’ve seen. Secondly, there’s a documentary, made by LOGO TV - The Ride: Seven Days to End AIDS which is available through iTunes. It follows the experience of 8 participants (or 9 if we count Ginger!) through the event itself and is well worth watching.
One of the success factors of the first series was the weekly newsletter I sent out to the riders who participated. Well times have change and so for this year, I thought it was time to join the blogging world and will be posting the newsletter on this new website as the weeks progress.
Want to support the CAT Series? You will notice that there are Google Ads and Amazon links on this site. To support this site all you need to do is click on a few of these links or buy a few things. All funds raised by this site goes towards the $2,500 each rider commits to raising (I’m rider #1576). Amazon contributes 4% of everything spent which is awesome. You can also contribute directly if you like, simply click here, which will take you to the ALC page. Remember, no donation is too small and it is really appreciated!!
